In 1889, Belgium adopted the latest Mauser rifle in order to modernize its army; to produce the 150,000 pieces needed, the Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre was created.

The group is quickly referred to by the name of the city where its factories are located: FN Herstal.

During the 20th century, the FNH is famous for its collaboration with the American engineer John Moses Browning, but also for the work of the Belgian Dieudonné Saive, both at the origin of some of the most emblematic weapons in History.
